ABSTRACT
In this chapter we address the current and potential future conditions of community college faculty in the United States as we describe its work and propose a transforming identity. The chapter has three primary purposes. First, to give a sense of how community colleges have changed during the past 25-30 years, we offer a brief discussion of our concept of ‘new world colleges’. Next, we investigate how work has been disturbed and is disturbing for community colleges as the shift to ‘new world colleges’ has taken place. Finally, we move to the heart of the chapter: an exploration of a transforming politics, offering possible alternatives that might allow community college faculty the means to respond proactively to the changes brought by the New Economy.
