ABSTRACT
Higher education is partly about general education and generic skills but it is also about separate subjects organised into their own ‘academic tribes and territories’ (Becher and Trowler, 2001), and separate academic sub-cultures belonging to those subjects. Universities have been described as ‘plural institutions’ (Clark, 1983). Academic subjects are an important aspect of this plurality.
