ABSTRACT
India committed itself to the protection of its environment in the 1980s when it set up a Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and passed a range of legislation. In 1991 India committed itself to the New Economic Policy, a programme of liberalisation. As this chapter explains, the tension between economy and environment has produced increasing conflict ever since.
