ABSTRACT
Of all the topics of interest in modern social theory, it is decidedly the concept of globalization that still garners the most attention. However, this has not always been the case. Only from the mid-1980s onwards did the term ‘globalization’ really begin to take hold within social thought. Before then, the term was used only intermittently and without much fanfare. By contrast, use of the term nowadays has become ubiquitous; it is used by many to explain why and how a whole host of events are taking place.
