ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the evidence related to the impact of different forms of preservice teacher education programs on various aspects of teacher recruitment, retention, and quality. Although our analysis will include comparisons of research on traditional and alternative teacher education programs and 4-year and 5-year programs, this mode of analysis is primarily a result of how the empirical research on teacher education programs has been organized and conducted. We review the research as it has been structured and then seek to identify amore productive direction for inquiries into the nature and impact of teacher education programs.
