ABSTRACT

This chapter looks across the preceding chapters that reviewed the empirical research on selected topics concerning preservice teacher education in the United States and suggests a research agenda for the field that seeks to overcome some of themajor limitations in the existing research and build on promising lines of work. It also discusses the conditions needed to support the implementation of this research agenda. I begin by reviewing the charge to the panel and the general direction of our recommendations. After reviewing some the limitations in our work, I offer a research agenda that we the panel believe addresses the research designs, methodologies, and topics that offer promise to raise the quality of research in the field.
