ABSTRACT
John Martin was an English painter born in the North East to a poor family. He lived from 1789 to 1854. He was inspired by the work of John Milton, and his huge canvases show biblical subjects on a vast scale and all are intensely dramatic. He painted catastrophic scenes of cities and landscapes. His work influenced J. M. W. Turner amongst others.
