ABSTRACT
In an open challenge to public opinion and law of the state of California, San Francisco city authorities marked the beginning of 2004 by issuing marriage licences to same-sex partners. Waving his licence, one of the ®rst recipients commented jubilantly: `At long last . . . all the humiliation and ignorance and hate . . . could not change our love for each other. Our love has changed the world'.
