ABSTRACT

The results presented in the chapters above have considerable implications not only for career actors (i.e. individuals interested in their own careers) but also for those career practitioners managing and consulting to people and organizations (see the previous chapter). They also provide some lessons for career researchers. In essence, the work of 5C as research collaboration has generated insight in three areas. First, we have looked at various facets of career success and career transitions and what individuals from different countries and cultures, occupations and age groups regard as important in this respect. This has consequences for career theory in terms of future research themes and the available theoretical concepts. Second, we have experienced the potential, but also the limits, of applying a specific combination of qualitative methods in a culturally and language-wise mixed setting, in terms of the respondents we asked, their context and the research team. This contains some lessons concerning methods and methodology. Third, we gained experience about managing a research network spread out over all the major culture clusters of the world and over an extended period of time. This offers some insight for similar endeavors. In the remainder of this chapter we will address these issues in turn.
