ABSTRACT

I shall begin my response by replying to the paper by Mary Gerhart and Allan Melvin Russell, since they present a view of theology and its possible relations to science that is very different from my own. The focus of my response will be a discussion of the nature of theology and of theological rationality. Having laid out my own view of theology, I shall turn to the paper by Philip Clayton and Steven Knapp, with which I have a great deal more sympathy. My strategy will be to indicate how I would have written their paper had it been my own. Finally, I shall turn to Nicholas Wolterstorff’s paper. Since I find myself in close agreement on the issues he raises, I shall use his paper as a starting point for further reflection on the parallels between theology and science.
