ABSTRACT

The fearfulness of the ghost has already been apprehended, curiously and epochally, by the prince of the postmodern himself, Jacques Derrida. It is a spirit that compels Derrida to say something once more about the “a,” the intrusive vowel that has long cast the shadow of differance, but now in an even more fateful way. The aporia of postmodern religious thinking is itself a kind of aporia, a displacement of the fundamental zone of undecidability for the “Western,” not simply Greek, philosophical tradition. Nietzsche's guest is Descartes' ghost, the infinity that both logically and existentially overwhelms the positing of the finite. But it is even more the specter that cannot be exorcized by any “deconstructive” reading of the entire discursivity of Western history.
