ABSTRACT
In December 2004 the Dutch television news program Nova interviewed a mixed couple-a Dutch woman and her Moroccan husband-who opposed the registration of their new-born child as both a Moroccan and Dutch citizen in the Dutch municipal register. The father wondered what the Dutch authorities had to do with the Moroccan citizenship:
I thought I was living in the Netherlands and subject to Dutch law. Verdonk [the Dutch minister of Integration and Immigration at the time, bdh] says that dual citizenship is not allowed, but the civil registrar gives you dual citizenship, even when you do not want it. The Netherlands will never get rid of its Moroccans.1
