ABSTRACT

In previous chapters we focused our attention on foundational knowledge about teaching and learning and on instructional practices accomplished teachers use to effect student learning. In this chapter, we change our focus from what goes on in an individual teacher’s classroom to what is required at the school level to help teachers and students learn. Providing teachers with the necessary support and feedback to learn and to implement effective instructional practices requires leadership and changes in the ways schools are traditionally organized. As our experienced teacher readers know, improving school-wide practices across classrooms is difficult and challenging.
