ABSTRACT

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is considered the treatment of choice for anxiety disorders (Barlow, Gorman, Shear, & Woods, 2000; Hofmann & Spiegal, 1999; Newman, 2000). CBT is particularly well suited to delivery via interactive computer programs because it is highly structured with welldelineated procedures, it targets specific behaviors and symptoms, and it proceeds in a systematic fashion (Selmi, Klein, Greist, Sorrell, & Erdman, 1990). One of the most developed areas of research on the use of technology in conjunction with psychotherapy has been with respect to anxiety disorders. Technologies used for such treatment include palmtop computers, desktop computers, telephone-guided therapy, and virtual reality.
