ABSTRACT

Michelle’s vignette provides a snapshot of her first visit to Miranda’s house. Michelle had never conducted a home visit and expressed some fear and doubt about the usefulness of this experience. Miranda’s mother was difficult to reach and it took two weeks to schedule the visit. Michelle was also not sure about Mrs. Moore’s English proficiency and questioned her own ability to communicate effectively. However, despite these challenges, this encounter created new relationships and learning spaces for all three parties: the teacher, student and her mother. Many teachers are hesitant to plan home visits due to concerns about appearing intrusive, time limitations within already demanding family schedules, not speaking the families’ language, and safety. Yet, most of the content of this book would not be available if it were not for the learning that took place inside families’ homes. However, how these visits were conducted and the teachers and researchers’ understanding of their purpose were intrinsic to building trust with and learning from families.
