ABSTRACT

Family group conferencing (FGC) is an intervention used by some practitioners in the helping profession (i.e., social workers and community liaisons) and human service agencies. The philosophical tenets of FGC support the aforementioned chapter quote regarding AfricanAmerican families. FGC is a semiformal meeting that draws on the existing strengths that family members have and provides a context that mirrors the traditional values embodied in many African-American families. This chapter seeks to explore the relevance and cultural appropriateness of FGC as a tool for African-American families from an intergenerational standpoint.
