ABSTRACT
The two previous chapters on the electoral system and the party system provide an understanding of the context within which elections take place. We now place our focus directly on elections and voting behaviour. This chapter deals with the voters and examines some theories and evidence to help us understand their behaviour in elections – and also in referendums, given that these have become increasingly important political events in recent years.
