ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we take up questions about the histories of slavery and immigration in the U.S. Like the other historical subjects we have chosen to highlight in this book, the histories of slavery and immigration are topics that are central to both the public K-12 social studies curriculum, and to U.S. history and culture. Indeed, one could, hardly understand the story of U.S. history without close investigation into both topics. They have been among the most important features of the U.S. past; both have left deep marks on the legal, political, social, economic, and cultural foundations of the contemporary U.S.
