ABSTRACT

What is happening with the PhD? With research supervision and its oversight? With doctoral education? These are some of the key questions animating and energising this engaging, timely and important collection. Clearly, the field of doctoral studies is undergoing a significant transitional phase. We are currently in the midst of what seems quite momentous change, even as we struggle to make sense not only of what is happening in this recently emergent scholarly field of inquiry but also of where we have been and where we are going. Partly we are driven by forces beyond us; and partly we ourselves are driving change, as scholars and as practitioners in a range of associated activities that include research supervision, program development, policy formation, higher education studies, academic leadership and university management.
