ABSTRACT

There is a general opinion in Norway that participation in sport is good both for the individual and for society. For more than 100 years the Norwegian government has taken responsibility for making sport available to both adults and children who are interested. In this chapter we will explain how government intervention has influenced sport participation in general and organized sport participation specifically, particularly since 1990. We will also comment on a range of other societal and political processes that influence the population’s participation in sport.
