ABSTRACT

The use of first-person narrative in helping social workers to understand the experiences of transgender youth has been quite limited. Practitioners solicit the opinions of transgender male-to-female transgender youth only rarely. First-person accounts offer a unique perspective. Each story of a transgender person’s life is different, unfolding around the particulars of that person’s life. But listening for the themes and the patterns that emerge from the narrative may, if one is an astute listener, helps one to acquire some sharp cues to good practice.
