ABSTRACT
Nila Chalan has an infectious smile and an indomitable will – which helped her to become the second girl from her village to study in 7th grade, an achievement in itself. Nila is well known too, in the higher echelons of the district’s official circles, as the girl who made her village a success in sanitation and hygiene programmes. Nila, leading the team of child reporters, talked with the villagers and campaigned for total sanitation and hygiene in her village (Plate 19.1).
