ABSTRACT

In this chapter I refl ect upon the methodological issues involved in research designed to explore how meaning is made through tourism. Embedded within an anthropological framework, the research taken as a case study here focused on the relationship between heritage tourism and English national identity through an ethnographic investigation of three heritage sites: Battle Abbey, Hever Castle and Chartwell (Palmer 1999). In what follows, I discuss the original aims of the research, the research strategy and its implementation in order to illustrate the wider methodological issues that arise.
