ABSTRACT

The concept of risk is inextricably interwoven with its opposite concept of safety. Together both concepts create a system of thinking. However, when it comes to looking at risk in mental health services our thinking has traditionally been very concrete and focused almost exclusively on physical danger. Very little conscious attention has been given to the relational and social context that gives rise to dangerous feelings, thoughts and acts, and even less attention to the relational and social factors that give rise to an atmosphere of safety and security.
