ABSTRACT

Editor’s Note: This three-part essay begins by positing the structure of comic narrative as a tool useful for the study and design of metropolitan landscapes. It then critically applies the comedic model to an actual urban neighborhood. This Portuguese case study inventories comic tactics found in the vernacular landscape. The concluding section identifies possible sites and situations where designers might apply these kinds of tactics when working on, or thinking about, metropolitan landscapes. The following edited version maintains the varied tone and style present in Tatom’s original working draft, since any attempt to mold her unfinished work into a single argument would require undue editorial interpolation.
