ABSTRACT

The European Community makes little provision for a specific common forestry policy, and responsibility lies largely with individual Member States. One of the main documents related to forest sector development at an EU level is the Council Resolution on a forestry strategy for the European Union, adopted in 1998 (European Council 1998). This strategy promotes the concept of SFM based on the economic, ecological and cultural function of forests. Substantial elements of the development of the forest sector relating to nature tourism are the promotion of non-wood forest products, the promotion of employment and well-being, and environmental protection.
