ABSTRACT

The generational status of Latino families is an important variable to explore when interpreting why Latinos experience the educational system in vastly different ways (Hernandez, 2006; Galindo & Reardon, 2006; Reardon & Galindo, 2006). Furthermore, parental educational participation in children’s education has been documented as critical to understanding differences in how children experience education (Lee & Bowman, 2006; Raikes et al., 2006; Brooks-Gunn & Markman, 2005). For these reasons, this chapter examines young Latino children’s demographics, educational circumstances, and family characteristics by generational status. Additionally, promising early childhood and education programs and a promising school district in Phoenix, Arizona, all of which serve mainly Latino immigrant families, are presented.
