ABSTRACT

When artist Christina Aguilera released this song with her album Stripped (2002), she connected her femininity with sexuality, describing it as “dirty” and “sweaty.” Coming from the girl-next-door pop star, this song caused much controversy in the pop music world. Aguilera quickly adopted the image of being slutty and risqué. Aguilera's changing image, driven by the words of her song, illustrates the importance of language in gender representation. How an individual presents herself (or himself) as female or male, feminine or masculine, is in large part an accomplishment of language.
