ABSTRACT
During the First World War, the Argonne region in north-eastern France was one of the main battlefield areas, and suffered great devastation. In spite of post-war reconstruction, its surroundings today still bear the marks of this almost century-old wartime destruction and damage. Here I will address the issue of whether, and how, the present inhabitants of Argonne use these surroundings to formulate a sense of identity.
