ABSTRACT

The issue that links most of the policy debates described in this book is the proper balance between gender differences and legal equality. The equalitydifference issue is, in its most basic form, the controversy over the meaning of the US Constitution and its guarantees of equality as they apply to gender and women’s rights. This book begins with constitutional policy because it is the foundation for other policies of federal and state governments. It is also representative of the legal ideologies that inform debates over specific areas, such as education, work, family, and sexuality.
