ABSTRACT

Introduction In the previous chapter, Max Farrar and Richard Taylor explored the theoretical perspectives underpinning community engagement activities by universities, looking particularly at volunteering as a significant locus for community engagement. Leeds Met’s statement of Vision and Character explicitly lays out our commitment to ‘creating a culture of celebration which values pioneering relationships with other world-class regional organisations across education, the arts, sport, business and wider community life throughout the North of these islands’ (Leeds Metropolitan University, 2006). In this chapter we provide some examples from Leeds Met of diverse forms of community engagement in practice in sporting, cultural, educational and social contexts.
