ABSTRACT

Introduction When students first start at university, there is a relatively short period in which a favourable impression can be made. If we get things right, we can set the tone for a productive and positive higher education experience as well as laying the foundation for nurturing lifelong learning behaviour and a relationship with education. However, all too often in the first couple of weeks of university life, students are faced with confusion, queuing and excessive bureaucracy. Sometimes this experience can continue throughout the life cycle of the student. In this chapter we will outline how in our respective universities we have tackled the challenge of improving the student experience from welcoming, orientation and induction to graduation, for both undergraduates and postgraduates starting courses of all kinds.
