ABSTRACT

The primary purpose of this chapter is to describe the item and prompt development process and to identify various considerations that test developers should take into account as they design and develop performance assessments. This chapter is intended for the test developer. It is intended to assist the test developer to focus on various considerations of the development process, particularly those that are relevant to the inclusion of performance assessments. This chapter begins with the characteristics of various item types, includes a discussion of the item and prompt and scoring rubric development processes, and presents information about the test assembly process when performance assessment items are to be included.
