ABSTRACT
This chapter overviews the history of research on classroommanagement as it developed across the 20th century, taking into account both its substance (theoretical base, questions, findings) and its design and methodology. It highlights major influences and trends in the development of a knowledge base on the subject, introducing many of the bodies of theory and research that are elaborated in detail in subsequent chapters and outlining a big picture within which to locate them.
