ABSTRACT

It is rare to find a professional who emerges from a graduate training program and feels entirely prepared for the work that lies ahead. Inevitable gaps exist between the graduate school–based training and internship practice, and the personal and professional demands of the “real world.” Time and experience may be needed to integrate and apply prior training experiences to professional practice. For example, research within the teacher education field suggests that it is not until a teacher’s third year of teaching that he or she is prepared to implement many of the methods introduced during the teacher training programs because he or she is too busy simply “surviving.”
