ABSTRACT

The daily activities of school counselors take place within a complex of academic, social, cultural, political, legal, and professional influences (Remley, Hermann, & Huey, 2003), some of which are so basic to the functioning of schools as to be removed from the conscious awareness of students, staff, and the community; others are thrust into consciousness assuming a level of transparency that creates a palpable urgency to behave with deliberate consideration and reflection. The school counselor must have an appreciation both for the policies and practices that structure the foundational context and for the tools to deal ethically and effectively with the occasional dilemmas and crises.
