ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a theoretical explication of the ways in which race, language, and literacy constitute capital in school. The author proposes a template for transforming school and classroom structures so that students’ knowledge and skills are equitably exchanged into valued resources and power. Before reading this chapter, reflect on your own experience and think about the following questions:

• Have you had the experience of being treated as other in a school or social institution? • Did this treatment have high stakes in influencing your life chances and pathways? • Did your experience shape your current attitudes and practices?
