ABSTRACT

The woman warrior described in this chapter is a dubious type. She is not entirely human and it is not even clear if she is a woman at all: the woman warrior of feminist science is the hybrid figuration of the cyborg. The term cyborg is short for cybernetic organism. A hybrid of body and technology, of flesh and steel, the cyborg of contemporary popular

culture often is depicted as the highly gendered incarnation of either the sexy femmebot or the hard-boiled masculine terminator. The latter is the preferred version in science fiction, where cyborgs figure as ultra-gendered fighters, in films such as Terminator, Bionic Woman, Robocop, The Matrix and Ghost in the Shell. Cyborg bodies are simultaneously biological and technological. They seem like a combination of human organs infused with visible implants. There obviously is not anything purely natural about them.
