ABSTRACT

As a non-Christian language teacher and teacher educator, having been exposed to Christianity during childhood in Japan, and now as a semi-devoted Buddhist, I have had two experiences, one over 20 years ago and another recently, which made me think about issues of religious faith, ethics, and teaching a second language. In this chapter, I will recount these episodes and explore interconnections among issues in teaching culture, religious faith, power, positionality, and situated ethics. Faith and language teaching pose challenging issues that cannot be resolved in simple terms. Thus, my intent here is to expose the complexity of the issues rather than provide definitive answers to the challenges.
