ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates several statistical methods for analyzing single subject research design data. It introduces the long-standing debate between visual and statistical analysis of single subject data and outlines limitations of visual analysis as documented in the research literature, which has, in part, served as justification for using statistical techniques to evaluate single subject data. The chapter provides a few methods of statistical analysis that have been proposed and used with single subject design data, explains their calculation with a few hypothetical data sets. It analyses several statistical programs that have been created to assist with the statistical analysis of these data. The chapter suggests that several statistical methods that include illustrative calculations which are supplemented by references and resources for further inquiry and use. It discusses the complementary use of visual and statistical analysis and the potential impact of single subject meta-analyses.
