ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the ethical issues that must be considered in applied research. It describes the ethical guidelines behavior analysts and "scientist-practitioners" must follow when using single subject research methodology to answer research questions related to the effectiveness of their instructional and treatment programs. The Council for Exceptional Children has developed a Code of Ethics containing eight fundamental ethical premises for guiding teachers of students with exceptionalities, while psychologists have developed ethical principles for conducting research. These principles were derived after extensive dialogue among groups of psychologists. The major element of ethical practice that applies to empirically verified intervention is the principle of full and open disclosure of information. Student-researchers will likely be familiar with ethical procedures for preparing manuscripts and professional documents which avoid the issue of plagiarism or the use of other's ideas and work without proper credit being given to the author or originator of the work.
