ABSTRACT

While this Companion focuses on contemporary English language studies, the following provide accounts of the history of English for those who would like to follow up this topic. Baugh and Cable is a classic discussion of the history of English, now in its fifth edition. Crystal is a more popular account that also covers contemporary language. Leith and Milroy and Milroy provide a stronger emphasis on social and political issues, with Milroy and Milroy focusing particularly on standardisation both historically and in the present day. Mugglestone is a substantial edited collection, bringing together contributions from a range of scholars and including a final chapter on the twenty-first century. Singh is a more introductory volume.
