ABSTRACT
In the past twenty years documentaries have become an increasingly important element of the cultural mainstream. During this period scholarship on the documentary has also begun to flourish. In this essay I identify the most salient philosophical issues having to do with the nature of documentary, issues in documentary representation, and the ethics of documentary filmmaking.
