Hollywood, as Thomas Elsaesser chronicles it, is an economic and industrial phenomenon, an anthropology of America, a stylistics and a narrative force, and, among other proliferating ideas, a seismograph that registers proximate transitions in the business of moving images as well as broader transformations in American life – and American media-saturated life – more generally. Change itself as one of the ways Hollywood maintains its power, even a stable presence in the media landscape fostered through that very change. It is in this respect that the author intends one more meaning to the notion of ‘minding Hollywood.’ This would take ‘minding’ to be an active verb – the imparting of mind, of the processes of mentation, to at least this iteration, the mind-game film, of Hollywood cinema.
