ABSTRACT

David is a 28-year-old Chinese American man who recently began individual counseling. He and his parents immigrated to the United States when he was 5 years old. His parents have invested significantly in his welfare because he is the only child in the family. Although he has been raised and educated in the United States, David’s parents have been instilling in him many of their Chinese cultural values. Growing up, David saw that his father was the person who had the final say on many issues in the family. He was taught to follow the tradition of showing respect for his elders and not to raise his voice to them. Family always came first, and personal needs were set aside for family needs.
