ABSTRACT

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is valuable in treating a range of emotional disorders (Beck, 2005). For each of these dif®culties there is a unique and speci®c theory directing understanding and treatment. Nevertheless CBT has much in common across disorders and in this chapter we outline the key characteristics that de®ne CBT. We then review the past development of CBT for psychotic illnesses like schizophrenia, which we refer to as CBT for psychosis (CBTp).1 Next we review the present status of CBTp in terms of the extent and limits of the current evidence base, as well as outlining the unique and speci®c characteristics of CBTp. We then offer our view of the future development of CBTp.
