ABSTRACT

Early on in Natsume So¯seki’s Kokoro, Sensei and his young protégé are taking a stroll in Ueno Park talking about love. “Your heart has been made restless by love for quite some time now,” Sensei tells the young narrator. Finding nothing in his heart that corresponds to such a feeling, the latter replies:

“But there is no one whom you might call the object of my love,” I said. “I have not hidden anything from you, Sensei.”
