ABSTRACT

This chapter describes approaches to the design and technical verification of assessments of performance. The chapter begins with a brief definition of performance measurement and describes a set of validity criteria that should be in place to guide the design of performance assessments that may serve multiple purposes. Design criteria include descriptions of families of cognitive demands, approaches to ensure content representation, and templates or objects to promote economic design and renewal. We then illustrate with multiple examples from K–12 education and from the training community. The context of most of the chapter is the use of technology tools for design, administration, and automated scoring. We conclude with future directions in performance measurement and its implications.
