ABSTRACT

634Design languages and notation systems hold great practical and theoretical significance for instructional design. Instructional designers use multiple design languages in the creation of designs. Notation systems make design languages visible and document those solutions. Design languages provide the building blocks of an evolving design. Design languages are used by individual designers; shared design languages and notation systems are necessary for multi-participant design teams to function, even at a basic level. Design languages for instructional design allow us to view instructional design, instructional theory, instructional design theory, and day-to-day practice in a new way that enhances our understanding of all of them.
