ABSTRACT
The United States has been an ethnically and racially diverse society since its inception. The mix of people brought together by European colonization of Native American lands, the African slave trade, the annexation of large parts of the Southwest, and centuries of voluntary immigration from all parts of the globe has resulted in a diverse society. Ethnicity and race also have always been markers of inequality in public life in the United States. This fact is especially true in education.
